Remembering Deputy Randy Hamson
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department –Santa Clarita Valley Station is saddened to announce the loss of one of its deputies. After a long and hard fought battle, Deputy Randy Hamson succumbed to injuries he sustained after being struck by a car on Saturday, August 16, 2004. Randy had been with the Department for just over five years when the accident occurred. Sadly, Randy becomes the third deputy to be killed in the line of duty in Santa Clarita Valley Station’s history.
On that date Deputy Hamson was conducting a follow-up investigation for a traffic collision that had occurred earlier in the shift on Sierra Highway. It was in the late evening hours, and the portion of the road where they were conducting their investigation was poorly lit. Randy saw a vehicle driving with its headlights off and used his flashlight in an attempt to get the driver’s attention. As Randy's attention was drawn to that vehicle, he stepped forward and was suddenly struck by another vehicle coming toward him. The driver of the vehicle that struck Randy never saw him before the collision occurred.
Randy was rushed to the hospital and treated for a significant head trauma and other injuries. In October of 2004, he was transferred to Casa Colina Hospital, a long term care facility in Pomona. Randy remained in their care until death became imminent. On October 24th, 2008 Deputy Randy Hamson passed away.
Randy joined the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department on March 23, 1999, and graduated the Sheriff’s Academy on August 27, 1999. He worked at Pitchess Detention Center - East Facility, until April of 2003, and then began his patrol service at Santa Clarita Valley Station in April of 2003.
Randy will always be remembered as a diligent and hard working deputy. He was admired and respected by his fellow protectors, and the community. He was a great partner, public servant, and friend. He will truly be missed.
Up until the time of the accident, Randy resided in Simi Valley California with his wife and their three children. Randy is also survived by his parents Jim and Carolyn Hamson, who reside in Paso Robles, his brother Tim Hamson, who is a Los Angeles City Fire Fighter and former Los Angeles Police Department member, and his brother Mike Hamson, who resides in Washington.
His wife Cindy said what Randy always wanted to do was protect and serve the public -- like many, he lost his life fulfilling that dream.

On Tuesday, November 24, 2009, the City of Santa Clarita, Santa Clarita Deputies, and Pardee Homes joined to dedicate "Dep. Randy Hamson Ct." in the City of Santa Clarita to forever honor and remember fallen deputy Randy J. Hamson and his family.
Sheriff Lee Baca, Captain Jacques La Berge, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department; Mayor Frank Ferry, City Manager Ken Pulskamp, City of Santa Clarita; President and Chief Executive Officer Mike McGee, Pardee Homes; and Rosalind Wayman, Senior Deputy for Supervisor Michael Antonovich joined family members, friends, and colleagues today to forever memorialize a community hero, fallen Los Angles County Deputy Sheriff - Randy J. Hamson.
Deputies from the Santa Clarita Sheriff's Station stood shoulder-to-shoulder in unity with members of the Los Angeles County Fire Department and the California Highway Patrol to pay tribute to their fallen comrade and his family at the ceremony. All looked on as Randy's brother Tim Hamson, a Los Angeles City Firefighter, and Randy's three sons climbed a Los Angeles County Fire Department ladder truck, which was draped with an American flag, and unveiled the brand new street sign for the first time.
The naming of the street and placement of the sign was made possible after Santa Clarita City Manager Ken Pulskamp pursued the matter and joined in partnership with Pardee Homes in June of this year. Ultimately, a beautiful new community being developed by Pardee Homes, known as Golden Valley Ranch, was identified as the perfect location.
The street is located at the end of Via Princessa in the City of Santa Clarita where rolling hills can be seen for miles. "Deputy Randy Hamson Court" intersects an elementary school and a planned senior citizen housing development and is now where Randy will be remembered and stand watch over the community forever.
“It is the hope of Pardee Homes that this street will serve as a permanent reminder of Deputy Randy Hamson’s selfless dedication and sacrifice to protect and serve his community,” said Mike McGee, Pardee Homes president and CEO. “Let us never forget brave individuals like Deputy Hamson who risk their lives every day to protect us, our property and improve upon the quality of life in the communities where we live.”
Deputy Hamson was investigating a traffic collision on Saturday, August 16, 2004, when he was struck by a car. After a long hard fought battle, he succumbed to his injuries on October 24, 2008.
"The loss of Deputy Randy Hamson was tragic for the Sheriff's department and the entire Santa Clarita community," said Mayor Frank Ferry. "The City of Santa Clarita hopes the dedication of a street sign that will be placed near a school and a senior community, in his name will preserve his memory and his honorable service to this community."
