INFORMATION BULLETIN - "Latin Lottery Scam"
Don't be a Victim
Protect yourself: Learn about the "Latin Lottery Scam" which targets primarily Hispanic females. The suspects are usually Spanish speakers who prey upon Latino victims.
The suspects work as a team of two, but pretend not to know each other, while they work together to take your money. The first suspect will pretend to be looking for a street address, lawyer, or immigration office, but then will reveal a big secret: he or she has a winning lottery ticket! The suspect will say they are in the country illegally and cannot cash the ticket, unless you help. They will want you to give them thousands of dollars in exchange for the "winning" ticket or to help them collect their winnings. A second suspect will overhear your conversation, and offer to let you use their cell phone to call the Lottery commission to confirm it really is a winning lottery ticket. The person on the phone will confirm that the ticket is a winner. Now, if you'll let them drive you to your home or bank to retrieve thousands of dollars in cash or jewelry, they'll double or triple your money just as soon as they collect their grand prize from the Lottery.
Don't believe it! The California Lottery does not work that way. Thousands of Spanish Speaking residents across America have lost their hard earned money to this scam.
The California Lottery does not require that a person be a U.S. citizen in order to claim a lottery prize;
The California Lottery never confirms over the phone that a ticket is a winner;
The California Lottery never requires the winner to pay money in order for a prize to be claimed;
No one needs any help cashing in a lottery ticket. If someone is asking you to get money out for them to hold, they are intending to steal it. If you are approached by someone who claims to have won the lottery, but needs your money in order to claim their prize, contact the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station immediately. To report persons committing this crime please call the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff Station at (661) 255-1121 or report anonymously at 661-284-2TIP (2847) or on-line at www.scvsheriff.com.
